Somerset (61-57) (Defeated Portland, 4-1. I said they needed 5 out of 6 and took 4 out of 6. That pulls them within 3.5 games with 19 games left)

Vargas is 5-for-5 stealing bases in his last seven games.

LF Jared Wegner0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K

RHP Cody Poteet3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
A solid second rehab appearance for Poteet.
RHP McKinley Moore: (W, 3-1)  0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
The easiest win he will ever earn.
RHP Lou Trivino1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
I don’t know how he “looks,” but he is likely not far away from being an MLB option.
RHP Leonardo Pestana1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

LHP Ryan Anderson1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
The tall (6’6″) lefty hadn’t pitched since June 16th. Season: 3.24 ERA (25 IP, 20 H, 11 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 30 K). Anderson has allowed 3 homers in 83 innings over the last two seasons.
RHP Danny Watson1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (65-54) (Defeated Wilmington, 6-3, to complete a 6-game sweep. It is their 7th win in a row)

2B Roc Riggio: 3-for-4, 3B (5), HR (9), RBI, 2 RS, K
Riggio ends up a double shy of the cycle. He is hitting .222/.350/.389 in 433 PA (23 doubles, 5 triples, 9 HR, 37 RBI, 64 R, 24-for-30 SB, 14.5% BB, 19.4% K). If he gets the average up, he is exactly what you want a leadoff hitter to be.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, K
Lombard Jr.’s first extra-base hit since his promotion (18th game)
CF Brendan Jones0-for-4, RS, K
While he scored a run, he didn’t reach base safely. It is the first time in his 15-game career that he didn’t accomplish that (.283/.500/.478 in 66 PA)
RF Garrett Martin0-for-3, RS, HBP, K
3B Josh Moylan: 3-for-4, 2B (13), RBI, RS, K

LF Jackson Castillo2-for-3, RBI, BB
Since promotion: 14-for-34 (.412/.487/.706; 2 HR, 15 RBI). A pint-sized Aaron Judge?
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
DH Coby Morales1-for-3, 2B (2), RS, BB, 2 K
C Antonio Gomez0-for-4, 3 K

RHP Baron Stuart: (W, 8-4) 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K
3.45 ERA (107 IP, 91 H, 44 R, 41 ER, 4 HR, 41 BB, 88 K). This includes his 7 IP/1 ER start for Scranton, because why shouldn’t I include that?
RHP Sebastian Keane1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
4.85 ERA (78 IP, 73 H, 45 R, 42 ER, 7 HR, 40 BB, 79 K). It’s been evident for a while that they decided to slow down Keane, as he is pitching 1-2 innings every 3-4 days.
RHP Blane Abeyta1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Mason Vinyard0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Yorlin Calderon (S, 3): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (49-68) (Lost to Ft. Myers, 10-8, in 10 innings)

SS Roderick Arias0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
.227/.328/.380 in 503 PA (19 doubles, 7 triples, 11 HR, 66 RBI, 68 R, 31-for-44 SB (70.5%), 12.1% BB, 32.0% K).
Splits, by month:
April: .214/.327/.381; 2 HR, 8 RBI, 13 BB, 36 K
May: .189/.307/.263; 0 HR, 11 RBI, 15 BB, 38 K
June: .220/.278/.430; 4 HR, 24 RBI, 7 BB, 41 K
July: .282/.380/.423; 2 HR, 11 RBI, 13 BB, 20 K
August: .240/.363/.413; 3 HR, 12 RBI, 13 BB, 26 K
His second-half OPS is 101 points higher than the first half (.766 to .665). What does this mean? I have been consistent and I won’t change now: Arias, like many teenagers, shows signs of promise mixed with reasons to pause. It’s enough to get him to Hudson Valley.
LF Marshall Toole0-for-2, 2 RS, HBP, BB
I don’t know why he left the game (it wasn’t immediately after the HBP). Toole is hitting .268/.474/.317 in 57 PA (2 doubles, 8 RBI, 5 R, 7-for-9 SB, 13 BB, 14 K)
   LF Tyler Wilson1-for-1
CF Willy Montero0-for-4, RS, SB (11), BB, 2 K

DH JoJo Jackson0-for-4, K
  PH Dillon Lewis0-for-1
1B Parks Harber1-for-5, 2B (3), 3 RBI, RS
.271/.397/.479 in 58 PA (3 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 13 R, 4-for-4 SB, 10 BB, 12 K)
   PR Duncan Pastore0-for-0, RS
RF Joe Delossantos0-for-3, RS, 2 SB (8), 2 BB, 2 K
.231/.423/.282 in 52 PA (2 doubles, 3 RBI, 9 R, 8-for-9 SB, 11 BB, 13 K)
C Josue Gonzalez: 1-for-3, 2 SF, 3 RBI
Fun with stats: Gonzalez has four sacrifice flies in his last two games (he has 2 in his career before yesterday).
2B Owen Cobb1-for-4, 2B (3), SB (5), BB

RHP Gabriel Barbosa6 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 10 K, 2 HR

Yankees MILB 8/24: It’s Roderick Arias Night!

News:

Nothing.

Scranton (70-53) (Defeated St. Paul, 6-3)

DH Caleb Durbin2-for-5, HR (6), 4 RBI, RS, K
Durbin’s 3-run HR in the top of the 9th broke the 3-3 tie. His best for HR is 8, set in 105 games in 2022. He has 6 HR in 71 games this season. This is his 4th 4-RBI game this year (he’s never had a 5-RBI game). At this level: .298/.418/.464 in 289 PA (19 doubles, 1 triple, 6 HR, 48 RBI, 45 R, 23-for-25 SB, 14.2% BB, 10.0% K)
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, SB (12), BB, K
At this level: .298/.356/.444 in 135 PA (6 doubles, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 20 R, 12-for-13 SB, 8.1% BB, 20% K). Yes, he walked more last year (15.3% BB), but I am not worrying about that.  He makes solid contact, which is the most important thing as he returns to form.
3B Jorbit Vivas0-for-5, 2 K
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-4
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-3, BB, 2 K
CF Taylor Trammell1-for-3, 2 RS, HBP, 2 K
RF Oscar Gonzalez3-for-3, 2B (16), HR (7), 2 RBI, 2 RS
   PR-RF Cam Eden: 0-for-0, SB (29)
   PH J.C. Escarra0-for-1
   RF Greg Allen0-for-0
2B Jahmai Jones2-for-3, 2B (4), RS, SAC, K

LHP Tanner Tully5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Ron Marinaccio1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Scott Effross1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Effross maxed out at 90.9 with his sinker (averaged 90.7). Effross was never a power pitcher, so it’s hard to tell just how much he is progressing by velocity numbers alone.
RHP Nick Burdi: (W, 1-0)  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Burdi is sitting in the mid-90s. His 4-seamer velocity is down from his MLB average this year (97.5).
LHP Anthony Misiewicz (S, 7): 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (60-57) (Doubled up Portland, 8-4. Tomorrow is a must-win if they want a realistic chance at taking the second-half division title)

CF Spencer Jones: 2-for-4, 2B (21), RBI, RS, BB, K
.249/.331/.419 in 462 PA. August: .290/.372/.449 (5 doubles, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 9 R, 9 BB, 30 K)
DH Jon Berti2-for-3, HR (1), 3 RBI, RS, K
On his way back…
  PH-DH Cole Gabrielson1-for-2, K
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-5, 5 K
We’ll just pretend this never happened.
LF Grant Richardson0-for-3, RS, SB (14), CS (3), 2 BB, 2 K
RF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, SB (15), CS (4), BB, K
2B Anthony Seigler2-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, 2 SB (23), 2 BB
.221/.339/.396 in 358 PA (20 doubles, 11 HR, 40 RBI, 49 R, 23-for-26 SB, 14.8% BB, 17.6% K). Seigler is not the prospect anyone thought he could be, but he is having a nice year.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, RBI, RS, SB (8), BB, 3 K
August: .273/.342/.455 (18-for-66; 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 5 R, 5-for-8 SB, 5 BB, 17 K).
3B Max Burt2-for-5, HR (5), RBI, RS, K
C Juan Crisp0-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K
I love it when a little-used player contributes.

LHP Ben Shields2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
Since promotion: 3.00 ERA (39 IP, 33 H, 16 R, 13 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 46 K).
RHP Colby White: (W, 2-0)  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Ian Hamilton1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
An impressive first rehab appearance.
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Matt Sauer1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 4.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K. This is one way to make an impression.
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
At this level: 2.70 ERA (16.2 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 26 K). I know I have talked up relievers who ended up being traded or didn’t fire in MLB. I can’t guarantee that Reyzelman will be different. I can only tell you that he is an intriguing arm to watch.

Hudson Valley (64-54) (Defeated Wilmington, 7-3. They have won 6 in a row as they try to hold off Jersey Shore (3 games back), Aberdeen (3.5), and Greensboro (3.5) for the second-half title)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-3, RS, CS (6), HBP, BB
.216/.346/.371 in 429 PA (23 doubles, 4 triples, 8 HR, 36 RBI, 62 R, 24-for-30 SB, 14.7% BB, 19.3% K). The theme has been the same all year: He is making contact, drawing walks, and showing a little pop. His BABIP has been low since Opening Day, but it is up to .259.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-4, SB (6), BB, K
At this level: 8-for-65 (.123/.230/.123) with a 6-for-7 SB rate (he is 36-for-41 overall). His 21.6% K rate since his promotion suggests he isn’t overwhelmed.
1B Josh Moylan1-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K
RF Garrett Martin1-for-3, RS, SB (14), 2 BB
Martin has a 6-game hitting streak.
CF Jackson Castillo3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (2), BB
Since promotion: 12-for-31 (.387; 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 7 R, 2-for-2 SB). He has hit safely in 7 of the 8 games (in the other game, he left early due to injury).
3B Dylan Jasso1-for-5, K
DH Coby Morales2-for-5, 2 RBI, K
Since promotion: 10-for-23 (.435) with a double and 6 RBI.
C Antonio Gomez1-for-4, HR (5), RBI, RS, K
Gomez has 11 extra-base hits (7 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR) in 18 August games.
LF Anthony Hall2-for-3, 2 2B (3), RBI, 2 SB (4), BB

RHP Indigo Diaz0.2 IP, 3 H, 3R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
The Renegades went with a bullpen game today…
RHP Harrison Cohen: (W, 2-0)  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
At this level: 13.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 0 BB, 16 K. Cohen did enough at this level last year to earn a promotion to Somerset late in the year. They need to consider doing that again.
LHP Joel Valdez2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 BB, 6 K
RHP Thomas Balboni Jr.: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Matt Keating0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (49-67) (Split a doubleheader against Ft. Myers)

Game 1 (Came back from a 7-0 deficit in the 5th to win, 8-7)

SS Roderick Arias: 3-for-4, 2 2B (18), HR (11), 4 RBI, RS, SB (29), BB
Arias finished off the comeback with a walk-off double in the bottom of the 7th. This game pushed his OPS over .700 (.225/.324/.378; 18 doubles, 7 triples, 11 HR, 66 RBI, 66 R, 29-for-42 SB). It’s been a season of extremes for Arias, which isn’t surprising.
CF Willy Montero1-for-4
3B Hans Montero2-for-3, 2B (6), RS, BB
1B Parks Harber1-for-4, RS, K
DH Dillon Lewis2-for-3, 2B (1), 2 RBI, BB, K
Lewis’ 2-run double in the 6th tied the game. He has started his professional career with back-to-back 2-for-3 efforts (homered in his first game)
LF JoJo Jackson0-for-4, K
Jackson debuted on August 6th, disappeared from the lineup, and returned today. The 21-year-old switch-hitter was their 17th-round pick out of Georgia State.
RF Joe Delossantos0-for-3, RS, BB, K
C Diomedes Hernandez0-for-3, RS, BB, K
2B Owen Cobb3-for-4, 2B (2), 2 RBI, 3 RS, SB (4), K
Cobb’s first professional multi-hit effort.

RHP Carlos Lagrange2 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 3 K
Lagrange was still throwing hard but didn’t have his control/command tonight.
LHP Rafelin Nivar2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Aaron Nixon2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Kristofer Bow (W, 2-1): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
5.19 ERA (34.2 IP, 24 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 25 BB, 39 K). Bow has also hit 10 batters, so the control needs to be ironed out.

Game 2 (Lost, 7-6, in 8 innings)

CF Marshall Toole: 1-for-4, RS, SB (7), BB, 2 K
Toole is 11-for-39 (.282) with a pair of doubles and a 7-for-9 stolen base rate.

On his rehab stint: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. As I mentioned last night, Trivino doesn’t have options. Once his rehab stint is over, 40-man/26-man roster decisions are needed.
RHP Cam Schlittler: (L, 0-3)  3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Schlittler piggybacked the rehab assignments tonight. Since his promotion: 14.1 IP, 16 H, 11 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 13 K. Overall: 3.33 ERA (102.2 IP, 77 H, 50 R, 38 ER, 8 HR, 49 BB, 124 K)

Hudson Valley (63-54) (Defeated Wilmington, 2-1, in 10 innings. They trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the 9th but came back)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-5, K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-5, RS, K
RF Brendan Jones: 1-for-4, 2 SB (7), BB
Jones has reached base safely in all 14 professional games and is 12-for-12 stealing bases.
LF Garrett Martin: 1-for-3, 2B (14), HBP, BB, K
CF Jackson Castillo: 1-for-4, RBI, SB (1), HBP
It’s good to see that Castillo’s injury (suffered in a collision in the outfield) wasn’t serious. He hit the walk-off single in the 10th. Since promotion: 9-for-27 (2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 5 R). Overall: .263/.387/.431 in 364 PA (19 doubles, 2 triples, 9 HR, 44 RBI, 56 R, 17-for-22 SB, 16.5% BB, 19.8% K). The 21-year-old is having a nice, consistent campaign.
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-3, 2B (6), BB, 2 K
  PR-1B Kiko Romero0-for-0, RS
DH Coby Morales2-for-4, RBI, K
His RBI single in the bottom of the 9th tied the game at 1. He is 8-for-18 since his promotion (hit safely in all five games).
C Antonio Gomez0-for-4, 2 K
3B Brenny Escanio0-for-3, BB, 2 K

LHP Kyle Carr: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Carr continues his recent stretch of strong pitching. His last 7 starts: 1.01 ERA (26.2 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 14 BB, 21 K). Overall: 4.69 ERA (96 IP, 86 H, 60 R, 50 ER, 5 HR, 51 BB, 89 K). He entered his debut season with a lot of buzz. However, he stumbled for a while before finding his footing. I don’t think they give him a late-season Double-A start, but it is possible.
RHP Yorlin Calderon2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Huey Morrill2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
At this level: 3.30 ERA (43.2 IP, 38 H, 21 R, 16 ER, 6 HR, 14 BB, 45 K). Morrill was listed as a shortstop when the Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State last year (for good reason: He played 148 games in the field for Oklahoma State while making only 17 appearances on the hill)
RHP Kelly Austin: (W,4-0) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
This is how you keep the “Manfred Man” from scoring. Since being acquired: 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. The Yankees acquired the 23-year-old from the Astros for Caleb Ferguson.

Tampa (48-66)

The Tarpons had a rare Friday off. They are playing a scheduled doubleheader tomorrow.

FCL (35-22)

Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (17-36)

Their season is over.

DSL Bombers (30-25)

Their season is over. The Bombers had a good season but it wasn’t enough to make the playoffs.

Yankees MILB 8/22: Jasson Dominguez: 2 More Hard Hits

News:

Most of the time, roster crunches work themselves out.

In 2024, that might not be the case for the Yankees. The first move was easy, as Oswald Peraza was demoted to make room for Jazz Chisholm Jr. However, it won’t get easier from here.

Utilityman Jon Berti is about to begin a rehab stint, as is 1B Anthony RizzoRizzo can replace Ben Rice, who has options and hasn’t hit much lately. Berti? Good luck with this one. From a management standpoint, the Yankees can do the easy thing:  Demote Oswaldo Cabrera and keep everyone else. Berti would, in theory, be taking most of Cabrera’s playing time and the Yankees can justify it by saying DJ LeMahieu is their only viable defensive first baseman after Rizzo. Berti has never played the position and Cabrera has 28.1 innings there.

Is that what I would do? No.

Beyond that, OF Jasson Dominguez is finding his groove. While we have to factor in a potential adjustment period, it is hard to argue that Alex Verdugo is a better option.

As messy as that is, the pitching staff could be messier. Scott Effross, Nick Burdi, Lou Trivino, Clarke Schmidt, Ian Hamilton, and Cody Poteet are potential MLB options, and Luis Gil will come off the injured list at some point. Schmidt will be promoted as soon as he is ready. The others? They will be in a logjam. The Yankees can demote Will Warren (when Schmidt is ready) and DFA Tim MayzaUnlike Effross and Hamilton, Trivino is out of options. Once his rehab is over, a roster move must be made. It’s a situation where the Yankees bullpen hasn’t been top-notch, but some of their scrap heap pickups (Tim Hill, Michael Tonkinhave pitched well enough to keep their jobs. Jake Cousins is pitching too well (and missing bats) to send down.

My not-so-educated guess?  They will demote Warren for Schmidt and DFA Mayza for Trivino. Effross, Burdi, Hamilton, and Poteet may have to “wait their turn”. Hamilton has yet to start his rehab stint, so we don’t know what to expect. Keeping Poteet stretched out in Scranton would be prudent. Effross’ rehab ended a while ago. The Yankees aren’t convinced he is ready to contribute, but he is pitching well lately. They have the ability, through options, to keep Gil down in Scranton beyond his IL stint. They can use it as a reset and give him a few innings there to ensure he doesn’t go cold.

Yes, one position player and pitcher will be promoted on September 1st. That helps but doesn’t completely relieve the jam.

Scranton (69-52) (Lost to St. Paul, 8-7)

3B Caleb Durbin1-for-4, 2 RS, BB
The pesky Durbin is 15-for-55 (.273) in August with more walks (13) than strikeouts (8).
DH Jasson Dominguez: 2-for-5, RS, SB (10), CS (1)
Dominguez’s two singles were hit at 108.3 and 108.2 MPH and he has four multi-hit efforts in his last 7 games. By the way, Dominguez is now 97-for-116 (83.6%) stealing bases in his minor league career. I have written a lot about his stats since his latest comeback without mentioning his overall season for Scranton: He is hitting .304 with a .786 OPS in 125 PA.
2B Jorbit Vivas2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
1B T.J. Rumfield: 3-for-4, 2 2B (24), RBI, 2 RS, BB
Rumfield has six doubles in his last 10 games.
CF Taylor Trammell1-for-5, 3B (1), 3 RBI, RS
Trammell has 20 RBI in 18 August games.
C J.C. Escarra2-for-5, 2B (9), RBI, K

RHP Scott Effross1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Last 6 games: 8.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K

Somerset (59-56) (Lost to Portland, 3-1. They are now 4.5 games out. Before this series started, I said the Patriots needed to take 5 out of 6 to make the race interesting. So far, they are 2-1. 4 out of 6 would be acceptable, but the calendar is starting to run out (22 games left))

CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, 3 K
.248/.329/.419 in 453 PA (20 doubles, 3 triples, 14 HR, 63 RBI, 59 R, 21-for-29 SB, 10.4% BB, 37.1% K).
C Rafael Flores0-for-4, 2 K

RF Grant Richardson0-for-4, 2 K
CF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
2B Anthony Seigler2-for-4, 2 2B (20), SB (21)

LF Jared Wegner0-for-4, 3 K
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-3, 2B (5), SB (7), HBP
Vargas is 17-for-58 (.293/.359/.500; 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR) in August. Entering tonight, he was hitting .301/.347/.504 (138 wRC+) in 121 PA since June 7th (yes, he missed time due to injury)
3B Max Burt0-for-3, 3 K

RHP Zach Messinger5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
Messinger had to push himself through 90 pitches tonight. Season: 3.40 ERA (132.1 IP, 107 H, 67 R, 50 ER, 8 HR, 44 BB, 123 K). In his last 6 starts: 1.98 ERA (36.1 IP, 27 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 23 K). No, it isn’t lost on me that his hot stretch comes with a reduced K%.
RHP Leonardo Pestana0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Danny Watson: (L, 1-5) 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR

Hudson Valley (62-54) (Swept a doubleheader against Wilmington)

Game 1 (Won, 7-6)

CF Brendan Jones1-for-4, SB (4), K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-4, RS, K
1B Josh Moylan1-for-3, RS, BB
LF Garrett Martin2-for-3, HR (10), 3 RBI, RS, BB, K
This was the appetizer (scroll down to Game 2 for more)…
RF Coby Morales1-for-4, 2 RS, SB (3)
DH Dylan Jasso2-for-3, 2B (5), RBI, RS
3B Kiko Romero: 0-for-2, BB, K
C Edison Vivas2-for-3, 3 RBI, K
With Omar Martinez on the IL, Hudson Valley needed another catcher. Enter the 18-year-old Vivas, who entered this game with 27 games of professional experience (26 in the DSL, 1 in the FCL). He hit .217/.333/.253 with no homers and 8 RBI in those games. So, naturally, he is promoted to High-A and has a solid debut. I have zero information on him. His signing bonus isn’t listed, so they signed him for a small number. Additionally, I searched my website for his name and this is the first time I have typed it. In other words, I won’t pretend to know who he is.
2B Brenny Escanio0-for-2, BB, K

RHP Brian Hendry1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
If you forgot about the 24-year-old, it is understandable. This was his first appearance since April 25th. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in his professional career (12 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 7 BB, 17 K). He was the Yankees’ 10th-round pick in the 2023 draft out of Oklahoma State.
RHP Sebastian Keane1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Matt Keating (W, 4-3): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Blane Abeyta2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Game 2 (Won, 6-0. Three pitchers combined on a 7-inning no-hitter)

2B Roc Riggio0-for-2, RS, SB (24), BB, 2 K
Riggio didn’t finish the game last night and missed Game 1 today. However, he was back out there in Game 2.
LF Brandon Jones0-for-2, RS, SB (5), BB
With Tampa/Hudson Valley: 12-for-38 (.316/.544/.553; 3 doubles, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 11 R, 10-for-10 SB, 19 BB, 11 K). This is how you make an early impression.
3B Josh Moylan0-for-3
CF Garrett Martin: 2-for-3, 2 HR (12), 4 RBI, 2 RS
Martin has a 3-HR, 7 RBI day. It pushes his season to .210/.310/.436 in 289 PA (13 doubles, 3 triples, 12 HR, 41 RBI, 45 R, 13-for-15 SB, 9.7% BB, 28.0% K).
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-3, RS, 2 K
DH Coby Morales2-for-3, 2B (1), RS, CS (1)
Morales is 6-for-14 since his promotion and is hitting .256/.362/.326 in 398 PA overall (10 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 50 RBI, 56 R, 34-for-42 SB (80.95%), 12.6% BB, 28.9% K). He is 22 years old, so there is room for growth. He spends time at 1B/LF/RF.
C Antonio Gomez1-for-3, RBI, K
Gomez has a 7-game hitting streak (8-for-23) and a 17-game on-base streak (21-for-56 (.375); 8 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 6 BB)
RF Anthony Hall0-for-2, K
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-2

RHP Trent Sellers4.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
At this level: 2.28 ERA (75 IP, 39 H, 27 R, 19 ER, 3 HR, 34 BB, 88 K). As a starter: 0.69 ERA (26 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 29 K). The walk rate has fallen considerably as a starter.
RHP Mason Vinyard: (W, 6-2)  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.07 ERA (41 IP, 29 H, 20 R, 14 ER, 2 HR, 21 BB, 55 K). I told you to pay attention to Cole Ayers last night because, amongst a group of potential Somerset call-ups, the Yankees chose him. That is nothing against Vinyard, Keating, or whoever you think of.
RHP Thomas Balboni Jr.: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
If you are going to finish off a no-hitter, you may as well do so in style. With Enyel De Los Santos‘ stint being among the quickest in history, Balboni is left carrying the torch for the deadline deal with the Padres (for Brandon Lockridge).

Tampa (48-66)

Their game against Ft. Myers was canceled due to inclement weather. It won’t be made up.

FCL (35-22)

Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (17-36)

Their season is over.

DSL Bombers (30-25)

Their season is over. The Bombers had a good season but it wasn’t enough to make the playoffs.

Scranton (69-51) (Lost to St. Paul, 7-6, in 10 innings)

2B Caleb Durbin1-for-4, BB, 2 K
CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-5, RBI, RS
Since coming back from his most recent injury: 19-for-74 (.257). That does not include his 0-for-4 in Detroit. His numbers looked shaky, but he is now on a 12-for-27 run.
3B Jorbit Vivas0-for-5

C Carlos Narvaez1-for-5, RBI, 2 K

DH J.C. Escarra: 3-for-3, 2B (8), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Escarra is on a 6-game hitting streak (8-for-22). He is hitting .333 with a .951 OPS in 102 PA since his promotion.

Burdi averaged 94.6 MPH with his 4-seamer (95.9 max)
LHP Oddanier Mosqueda1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR

Gabrielson sets a personal best for RBI in a game.
RF Jared Wegner0-for-4, BB, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas: 1-for-3, HR (4), RBI, 2 RS, SB (6), 2 BB
For Somerset: .258/.299/.417 in 174 PA (4 doubles, 5 triples, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 17 R, 6-for-13 SB, 4.6% BB, 22.4% K). I won’t blow smoke up your butt, but any offense from Vargas is valuable. He is already Rule 5 eligible. Given he is now in Double-A, his chances to get picked go up. However, he is unlikely to be protected.
3B Max Burt0-for-5, 3 K

RHP Bailey Dees: (W, 5-7) 5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 10 K
Dees’ first career 10+ strikeout effort. Season: 4.64 ERA (120.1 IP, 106 H, 67 R, 62 ER, 13 HR, 49 BB, 126 K). As of this writing, he leads the Eastern League in strikeouts.

RHP McKinley Moore1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (60-54) (Defeated Wilmington, 5-3. They improved to 27-22 in the second half, which leads their division.)

Riggio has 4 doubles and 4 stolen bases in his last 6 games.
  2B Brenny Escanio0-for-1, K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-4, SB (5), BB, K
Since promotion: 7-for-52 (5-for-6 SB). His BABIP is .179 and his K% is a reasonable 21.7%. He is showing signs of adjusting, but I expected the struggle.
DH Josh Moylan1-for-4, HR (8), RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
RF Garrett Martin1-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, SB (13), 2 BB, 2 K
CF Brendan Jones1-for-2, RS, 2 SB (3), 2 BB, K

He turns 23 next April and one can see him getting to Somerset in a hurry next year. For now, he is doing what he needs to do.

LF Dillon Lewis2-for-3, HR (1), RBI, 2 RS, SB (1)
It was an impressive professional debut for Lewis, the Yankees’ 13th-round pick out of Queens College (NC). The 21-year-old right-handed bat hit .371/.444/.729 with 22 HR in 261 PA. He was 3rd in the Atlantic Sun Conference in homers and 4th in stolen bases (20).

C Diomedes Hernandez3-for-4, 4 RBI
The 19-year-old is 8-for-25 with 7 RBI at this level. He set a personal best for RBI tonight.
2B Owen Cobb0-for-4, K

RHP Danny Flatt: 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
His two starts at this level haven’t gone to plan, but that’s OK. We can treat this as getting his feet wet in a full-season league.
RHP Cade Austin1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
4.07 ERA (42 IP, 32 H, 22 R, 19 ER, 7 HR, 13 BB, 46 K)

Yankees MILB 8/20: Jasson Dominguez: 4 Hits

News:

Nothing

Scranton (69-50) (Defeated St. Paul, 9-4. A rare trip outside the Eastern timezone this week for Scranton. I believe they went to Omaha in 2023)

2B Caleb Durbin0-for-4, RS, 2 BB
Durbin has 11 walks in 14 August games.
CF Jasson Dominguez: 4-for-5, 3 RS, SB (9)
Dominguez is 11-for-22 in his last six minor league games.
3B Jorbit Vivas2-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
1B Carlos Narvaez3-for-4, HR (10), 3 RBI, RS, BB
I don’t think Narvaez will be a high-average guy in MLB, but he is at .271 this season.  This is his third consecutive 10+ HR campaign.
DH Taylor Trammell0-for-4, BB, K
RF Jahmai Jones1-for-5, 3B (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
C J.C. Escarra1-for-5, 2B (7), RS
Escarra has a 5-game hitting streak.
LF Cam Eden0-for-4, BB, K
SS Kevin Smith1-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, 2 K

LHP Thomas Pannone: (W, 7-9)  6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
Another strong effort for Pannone. Since signing with the Yankees: 2.25 ERA (32 IP, 30 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 4 HR, 2 BB, 30 K)
RHP Yerry De Los Santos1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Ron Marinaccio0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Scott Effross1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Effross has five straight scoreless outings (7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K)

Somerset (58-55) (Defeated Portland, 1-0, to move to within 4.5 games)

CF Spencer Jones3-for-4, K
.251/.332/.423 in 449 PA. Jones has five hits in his last two games and is 18-for-58 (.310) with four doubles and two home runs in August. While the K% is high (36.7%), the rest of his statistical profile looks pretty good – especially considering he was hitting .220/.314/.327 on May 31st.
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, K
   LF Cole Gabrielson0-for-0
C Rafael Flores1-for-4
Since promotion: .267/.348/.522 in 181 PA (8 doubles, 11 HR, 22 RBI, 25 R)
DH Tyler Hardman0-for-3, BB, K
RF Grant Richardson1-for-4, RS, 2 K
LF-1B Elijah Dunham1-for-4, 2B (19), K
Dunham’s double in the 9th brought home Richardson (Richardson scored on an error, which is why Dunham didn’t get credit for an RBI)
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-4
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, 2 K
1B-3B Max Burt1-for-3, K

RHP Cody Poteet2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Poteet’s first rehab appearance. It will be interesting to see how the Yankees arrange their pitching staff as we enter the last several weeks. Poteet may be used as a depth guy waiting in the minors.
RHP Lou Trivino1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Trivino’s third rehab appearance.
RHP Trystan Vrieling (W, 10-7): 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K
4.82 ERA (125 IP, 120 H, 70 R, 67 ER, 11 HR, 41 BB, 114 K). At a time when pitchers may start to tire, Vrieling is thriving. August: 18 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 17 K.  This is impressive for a kid spending his debut season in Double-A.

Hudson Valley (59-54) (Slaughtered Wilmington, 10-0)

2B Roc Riggio0-for-1, 2 SB (22), 4 BB, K
Riggio has two 4 BB games this season (he had one in his debut last year). His career BB% is 16.1%.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 SB (4), K
After a slow start following his promotion, Lombard has reached base safely six times in his last three games (4-for-11, 2 BB, 3 SB). He is 34-for-39 stealing bases between here and Tampa.
3B Josh Moylan0-for-5, RBI, 3 K
RF Garrett Martin1-for-3, 2B (13), RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
CF Brendan Jones: 1-for-2, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (1), 3 BB, K
Jones is the first 2024 draftee to make it to High-A. He walked 13 times and stole 5 bases in 9 games for Low-A Tampa. Drafted in the 12th round out of Kansas State, he is making an early impression.
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-3, 2B (4), RBI, RS, BB, K
Jasso is 9-for-38 (.237) with four doubles, a triple, and a homer since his promotion.
DH Coby Morales1-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Morales’ High-A debut.
C Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, RS
Gomez has 7 doubles in 14 August games (16-for-46).
LF Anthony Hall1-for-4, RBI, RS, K

RHP Baron Stuart: (W, 7-4) 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
Between here and Scranton (one emergency start): 3.65 ERA (101 IP, 88 H, 44 R, 41 ER, 4 HR, 38 BB, 84 K). He won’t be on prospect lists, but he has pitched well.
RHP Harrison Cohen2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
At this level: 11.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 12 K. Cohen finished 2023 with Somerset, so I hope he gets there again in 2024.
RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (46-65) (Lost to Fort Myers, 7-6)

CF Marshall Toole2-for-4, RBI, HBP, K
Toole is 10-for-29 with a pair of doubles and 8 RBI. He is 6-for-8 stealing bases.
SS Roderick Arias0-for-5, RS, 3 K
RF Willy Montero1-for-4, 2B (21), RBI, BB, 2 K
Montero has doubled in four straight games and has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games.
LF Tyler Wilson0-for-5, RBI, 2 K
2B Hans Montero1-for-5, HR (7), RBI, RS
1B Parks Harber1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, RS, BB
Harber hits his first professional home run. He is 9-for-31 with two doubles, a triple, and a homer.
DH Joe Delossantos0-for-3, RS, 2 SB (4), BB, K
C Josue Gonzalez1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
Gonzalez launches his first Low-A HR. The 20-year-old hit 6 HR in 36 games in the FCL this year.
3B Duncan Pastore2-for-3, RS, BB
Pastore has reached base 8 times in his first two professional games (5-for-6, 2 BB, HBP)

RHP Andrew Landry2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
This is essentially a “get your feet wet” season for Landry. He has tossed only 20 innings between here and the FCL.
LHP Rafelin Nivar2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Yoljeldriz Diaz2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Matt Givin (L, 0-1): 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Jordy Luciano1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

FCL (35-22)

Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (17-36)

Scheduled day off.

DSL Bombers (30-25) (Destroyed the DSL Rangers Blue, 16-2)

CF Francisco Vilorio1-for-3, 3 RS, SB (8), 2 BB, K
.196/.294/.345 in 170 PA. This is the bonus baby’s debut season, and while I like that he is showing some power (8 doubles, 4 HR), he also has a 32.9% K rate.
C Queni Pineda1-for-1, HR (5), RBI, RS
I am not sure why Pineda only batted once. He is at .254/.434/.438 in an impressive debut season.
  C Carlos Villarroel1-for-3, RBI, RS
Villarroel also left the game early. Like Pineda, he has composed a strong debut season: .299/.390/.410 in 136 PA.
SS Christofer Reyes4-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 3 SB (21)
Still only 16 (he turns 17 on 8/23), Reyes is hitting .250/.346/.314 in 179 PA with a 21-for-30 stolen base rate. He has two 4-hit games.
2B Luis Escudero2-for-2, 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (26), BB
The 18-year-old is hitting .287/.450/.418 with a 26-for-31 stolen base rate.
DH-C Justin Capellan2-for-5, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 RS, K
Like Pineda and Villarroel, Capellan is a catcher in his debut campaign. He is hitting .242/.365/.359 in 156 PA.
LF Richard Meran1-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
RF David Carrera1-for-3, 3B (2), 2 RBI, RS, K
Only 17, Carrera is hitting .276/.402/.418 in 122 PA.  He has 25 RBI in 35 games

LHP Franyer Herrera (W, 5-1): 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
2.01 ERA (49.1 IP, 43 H, 17 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 64 K). Herrera is 19 years old. This is his third season here, but he tossed only 20.1 innings in the first two seasons.

Yankees MILB 8/18: Kyle Carr Continues to Roll

News:

Nothing

Scranton (68-50) (Lost to Buffalo, 7-5)

2B Jorbit Vivas1-for-4, RS
.226/.362/.346 in 290 PA. If you want honesty, I am concerned by the power output.
SS Caleb Durbin2-for-2, RS, 2 HBP
Durbin has 9 HBP in 58 games for Scranton this year and 41 in 257 career games. It’s a feature, not a bug. We hope that he doesn’t suffer any more fluky injuries. He is hitting .305/.425/.474 in 263 PA at this level (14.1% BB; 9.9% K).
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, 2B (22), RS
DH Carlos Narvaez0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
LF Taylor Trammell1-for-4, HR (15), 3 RBI, RS, K
Trammell’s HR splurge settled down (nobody could keep up that pace), but he has 7 HR in 15 August games and 12 HR in 38 July/August games.
C J.C. Escarra1-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 K
What do the Yankees think about the 29-year-old’s catching? That could be important in determining whether or not Narvaez can be the #2 MLB catcher in 2025. All teams want a solid #3 waiting in the wings (yes, if Ben Rice is still around, he could be that as well)
3B Jahmai Jones0-for-4, K
RF Greg Allen1-for-4
CF Cam Eden0-for-3, K

LHP Tanner Tully5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Alex Mauricio 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.89 ERA (38 IP, 26 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 21 BB, 42 K)
RHP Phil Bickford1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
LHP Oddanier Mosqueda (L, 6-1): 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR

Somerset (57-55)

Their game against Hartford was canceled due to inclement weather. It will not be made up.

The Patriots, a consistent playoff team, are in trouble in 2024. While their second half is solid (25-18), it is dwarfed by Portland’s (31-12). The good news? The schedule offers them one opportunity to keep it interesting: A 6-game series in Portland starting on Tuesday.

Hudson Valley (58-54) (Lost to Hickory, 2-1)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-4, 2 K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, BB, K
Lombard Jr. has reached base four times in his last two games. It’s a start!
1B Josh Moylan0-for-4, 3 K
DH Omar Martinez1-for-3, 2B (13), BB
   PR Brenny Escanio0-for-0
CF Garrett Martin0-for-4, 3 K
3B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, 2B (3), RS, K
C Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2B (10), RBI. K
Gomez is up to .239 with a .766 OPS. After games of July 28th, his OPS was .492. His sample size isn’t as large as most at this time of the year, but increasing your OPS by 274 points in three weeks shouldn’t be glossed over.
LF Kiko Romero0-for-3, 2 K
RF Anthony Hall1-for-3, 2 K

LHP Kyle Carr: (L, 1-7)  5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
4.85 ERA (91 IP, 84 H, 59 R, 49 ER, 5 HR, 50 BB, 84 K). Did I mention his ERA was 6.53 after his start on July 10th? Since then: 29 IP, 14 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 10 BB, 29 K.
RHP Thomas Balboni Jr.: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Huey Morrill2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Sebastian Keane1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
As reliever: 9 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 14 K. I don’t know if this is seen as a permanent move or one to control his innings. My guess is the latter.

Tampa (46-65) (Lost to Clearwater, 12-9. A clinic in good bullpen work, this was not)

CF Brendan Jones2-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, 2 BB
Jones is 9-for-28 (.321; 3 doubles, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 7 R, 5-for-5 SB, 13 BB, 8 K). What do I look for in recently drafted college bats in Low-A? They should be able to conquer this level easily. That isn’t meant to diminish what Jones is doing because guess what? Not all of them can conquer this level. I do give leeway to the recently drafted guys. Everyone deserves an adjustment period.
SS Roderick Arias: 1-for-4, SF, 2 RBI, RS, HBP, K
.222/.322/.367 in 481 PA (16 doubles, 7 triples, 10 HR, 62 RBI, 64 R, 28-for-41 SB, 12.1% BB, 32.4% K). It is still too early to talk about his future. Many things need to come together for him to realize his potential. So far, I would say that his raw power has started to convert into some game power. His speed is evident, even if efficiency on the basepaths is not. The hit tool? That is likely the #1 thing that needs monitoring. His swinging strike percentage is too high, as is his K%. Crushing Low-A mistakes gets you to High-A. Beyond that? It’s up to him and the development team.
DH Willy Montero1-for-5, 2B (20), RBI, K
.255/.310/.374 in 413 PA (2o doubles, 2 triples, 7 HR, 52 RBI, 55 R, 10-for-11 SB, 7.0% BB, 21.5% K). Montero has doubled in three straight games and has hit safely in 13 of his last 14.
   C Josue Gonzalez0-for-1
RF Tyler Wilson1-for-4, RS, 2 K
LF Marshall Toole0-for-1, RS, 4 BB, K
Toole is 8-for-25 (.320; 2 doubles, 7 RBI, 2 R, 6-for-8 SB, 11 BB, 6 K). This is further proof that “runs scored” is a team-dependent stat. Toole has reached base 19 times in eight games and has crossed the plate twice.
2B Hans Montero0-for-3, SAC, 2 K
1B Parks Harber3-for-5, 2B (2), 2 RBI, 3 RS
Harber is 8-for-28 (.286; 2 doubles, 1 triple, 6 RBI, 7 R, 2-for-2 SB, 6 BB, 9 K)
C-P Diomedes Hernandez: 2-for-4, 3 RS, BB, K
3B Duncan Pastore3-for-3, RBI, BB, HBP
Pastore (24) gets on base five times in his professional debut. The Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Louisiana-Lafavette, where he hit .328/.406/.444 in 230 plate appearances in 2024. It was his first year at a Division I school. He spent his first four years playing for Division II Nova Southeastern.

RHP Bryce Warrecker3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K
Warrecker is going to take some time to develop. The 6’8″ RHP owns a 6.94 ERA at this level (36.1 IP, 40 H, 29 R, 28 ER, 4 HR, 19 BB, 27 K). He featured 6 pitches today, but two of them only registered once. His main 4-pitch mix was a 4-seamer/slider/change/cutter.
RHP Kristofer Bow0.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
There is no denying that Bow has intriguing stuff, including a mid-90s sinker. Like Warrecker, the stuff needs to be harnessed.
RHP Luis Arejula0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Alejandro Gomez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Jordy Luciano0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Aaron Nixon: (L, 3-3)  0 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
As I like to say, shred the boxscore and don’t look back. It happens to everyone.
RHP Luis Pacheco1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Diomedes Hernandez0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Yankees MILB 8/17: Jasson Dominguez: 2 Hits, SB

News:

Nothing

Scranton (68-49) (Lost to Buffalo, 9-1)

3B Jorbit Vivas0-for-4
2B Caleb Durbin0-for-3, SB (23), BB, K
For Scranton: .299/.416/.469 in 259 PA (23-for-25 SB). Durbin will be in the mix for a 2025 job, and his ability to make contact (his swinging strike percentage is elite), steal bases, and play anywhere helps his profile. Is he an everyday MLB player for the Yankees? That question is not easily answered. He doesn’t need to be an everyday starter to be useful.
LF Jasson Dominguez2-for-3, SB (8), BB, K
Dominguez has multiple hits in two of his last three games and has four stolen bases in his last four games. This was his second consecutive start in LF.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, 3 K
C Carlos Narvaez0-for-3, BB, 2 K
His 2025 role depends on how the Yankees view him: Do they think he is ready to be a #2 catcher? Or do they like him in the role of a #3 catcher? Remember that Kyle Higashioka dealt with this for a while (2017-2019) before settling into an MLB backup role.
CF Taylor Trammell1-for-4, 2B (17), RS
RF Jahmai Jones1-for-4, K
DH J.C. Escarra1-for-3, K
  P Peter Serruto1-for-1

LHP Victor Gonzalez1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Nick Burdi1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
Burdi may be the “next one up” over Scott Effross, but who knows?
RHP Joey Gerber1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
Gerber, a 27-year-old rehab project, pitched well in Somerset (1.76 ERA in 15.1 IP with an 18/8 K/BB)
RHP Peter Serruto1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Normally a catcher, Serruto is 2-for-4 at the plate while making two appearances on the hill (0.00 ERA).

Somerset (57-55) (Defeated Hartford, 3-2, in 10 innings)

CF Spencer Jones: 2-for-4, 2B (20), RS, K

C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, RBI

1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, RBI, 3 K
RF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, 3 K
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-4, RS, CS (3), 2 K
Seigler scored the winning run in the top of the 10th (as a “Manfred runner”) on a wild pitch.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, SB (5)
Vargas has hit safely in seven of his last eight games and is 14-for-48 (.292) with a double, two triples, and a home run in August.
LF Jared Wegner: 0-for-4, 3 K
3B Max Burt1-for-3, RS, 2 SB (9), HBP, 2 K

RHP Danny Watson1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Lou Trivino1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
Trivino’s second rehab appearance.

Yankees MILB 8/16: Carlos Lagrange Impresses

News:

After an outfield collision the other night, CF Jackson Castillo was placed on the injured list for Hudson Valley. Castillo hit .256/.386/.404 (133 wRC+) in 334 plate appearances for Tampa, earning his promotion to Hudson Valley. He has played seven games for the Renegades, going 8-for-23 with a pair of home runs and 11 RBI. His combined 137 wRC+ ranks 4th amongst full-season prospects in the entire organization (third if you eliminate Ben Cowleswho was traded at the deadline).

Scranton (68-48) (Defeated Buffalo, 3-2)

3B Jorbit Vivas1-for-4, RBI
SS Caleb Durbin1-for-4, RBI, K
Durbin owns a 5-game hitting streak (7-for-18, 1 double, 2 HR, 2 SB). He has one RBI in each game. Additionally, he is playing all over the field. In these five games, he has 2 starts at 2B, 1 start at SS, 1 start at 3B, and 1 start in LF. This could be the Yankees’ vision.
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, K
Since there isn’t a developmental reason for Taylor Trammell to play CF, I think it is notable when the Yankees give Dominguez reps in LF. Since returning from his latest injury: 12-for-61 (.197) with a pair of doubles and a homer.
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-4, 2B (21), RS
Rumfield has three 2-hit performances in his last six games. He is hitting .284/.353/.455 in 374 PA since his promotion.

C J.C. Escarra1-for-3, RS, K
RF Cam Eden1-for-3, RS

RHP Yoendrys Gomez4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
The Yankees have used him as a 3-5 inning guy all year, which hints at how they view him. He owns a 3.88 ERA (65 IP, 45 H, 29 R, 28 ER, 8 HR, 35 BB, 67 K). If you have forgotten, he is out of options in 2025.
RHP Yerry De Los Santos1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
4.17 ERA (45.1 IP, 52 H, 29 R, 21 ER, 8 HR, 18 BB, 43 K)

RHP Scott Effross: (W, 3-1)  1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
The fact that the Yankees went through the steps to add Tim Mayza to the 40-man/26-man rosters tells you that the Yankees are not comfortable with Effross’ progress. From a statistical standpoint, his last six games show progress (9 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K).
LHP Anthony Misiewicz (S, 6): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (56-55) (Lost to Hartford, 7-0)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, BB, K

DH Elijah Dunham0-for-4, 2 K
2B Anthony Seigler: 2-for-3, SB (20), BB

2B Roc Riggio2-for-4, 2 2B (22), 2 RBI
.216/.338/.376 in 403 PA. This is his second multi-hit effort in his last three games, and we hope his BABIP continues to normalize (.256).
SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-4, K
RF Jace Avina1-for-4, 2B (24), K
DH Omar Martinez1-for-4, SB (1)
He is more about walks and power than speed, but he did steal 8 bases in 2023 (the only season that he compiled more than one)
1B Josh Moylan0-for-4, 3 K
CF Garrett Martin: 2-for-3, HR (9), RBI, RS, SB (12)

.253/.310/.371 in 403 PA. He is 15-for-45 (.333) in August.
LF Marshall Toole1-for-4, 2 RBI, CS (2)
Toole is 8-for-24 with 7 RBI, 7 walks, and 6 stolen bases in 8 attempts.
2B Hans Montero0-for-4, 3 K
DH Joe Delossantos0-for-3, CS (1), BB, K

C Josue Gonzalez1-for-4, K
3B Owen Cobb0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K

RHP Carlos Lagrange4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
He allowed a leadoff single in the 5th, which eventually came around to score. Lagrange was humming again (maxed out at 98.3, averaged 97.1). The Yankees aren’t a system of extreme velocity, but Lagrange brings it. If he can harness his control (he’s only walked one hitter in 6.1 innings at this level), watch out.
LHP Rafelin Nivar1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 1 K
RHP Aaron Nixon1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Luis Pacheco2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Pacheco threw a 96.5 MPH sinker tonight. I am seeing signs as to why the Yankees signed the 25-year-old. He owns a 1.74 ERA in 10.1 IP with a 12/2 K/BB at this level.
RHP Jordy Luciano: (L, 2-4)  0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

FCL (35-22)

Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (17-35) (Lost to DSL Rockies, 4-2)

SS Dexters Peralta1-for-1
I don’t know why he was pulled, but he was lifted for a pinch-runner after his leadoff single. That likely isn’t good.
  PR-SS Ovandy Frias1-for-1, CS (2), 2 BB
CF Louis Pierre1-for-4, 3B (2), RS, K
2B Jelson Coca2-for-4, RBI, K

DSL Bombers (29-23) (Lost to DSL Tigers 1, 3-2. With little margin for error, this is a big loss in their quest to earn a playoff berth)

2B Luis Escudero1-for-3, RS, SB (24)
.270/.442/.405 in 147 PA. He is 24-for-29 in the stolen base department.
C Carlos Villarroel2-for-3, RBI
.286/.382/.400 in 123 PA. As I said yesterday, I don’t get excited over 17-year-old’s in the DSL. However, this is another young catcher having a solid season down here.

RHP Enixon Sanchez (L, 3-1): 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Only 17 (he started the season at age 16!), Sanchez owns a 2.79 ERA in 29 IP (14 H, 13 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 16 BB, 29 K)
RHP Rafael Arias
2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
13 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 18 K. Arias is a 20-year-old in his debut season.

Yankees MILB 8/15: Jasson Dominguez’s 3-Hit Night

News:

Last night, I said that you typically wait for a player to play a full game in the field before you put them on a “reinstate from rehab” watch.

I was wrong about C Jose Trevino, who is back with the Yankees after catching for seven innings last night. I don’t think that matters.

What does matter? How Trevino is used. He should be a true backup, not a platoon player.  Austin Wells has earned the job. Even the world’s biggest dolt can see that.

Scranton (67-48) (Defeated Buffalo, 8-2)

3B Jorbit Vivas0-for-4, RS, BB, K
2B Caleb Durbin1-for-4, RBI, BB
CF Jasson Dominguez: 3-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 SB (7), BB
As I said last night, if an organization says they don’t have room for you, force them to make room. I don’t expect them to call up Dominguez yet, but if he continues to show progress, what choice do they have?
1B T.J. Rumfield: 1-for-2, SF, 2 RBI, HBP, BB
He was pulled from the game after being hit in the head with a pitch in the 8th inning.

LF Cam Eden: 1-for-2, 2 RS, SB (28), 2 BB
C J.C. Escarra: 1-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS
With Carlos Narvaez on his way back, Escarra will get a needed break. He has caught almost every day, including both ends of a doubleheader, since Narvaez was promoted.
SS Kevin Smith: 1-for-2, RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
With Peraza in MLB and Josh VanMeter released, Smith will get some extra reps.

A loud night for Richardson, who is hitting .264/326/.417 in 342 PA.
RF Jared Wegner0-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 K
2B Anthony Seigler1-for-4, HR (11), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Seigler continues to add to his home run collection. He has homered in back-to-back games.
3B Alexander Vargas2-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS, K
Vargas, who has a good defensive reputation, continues to hit in Double-A (.732 OPS). Last season, he owned a .590 OPS in 103 games for Hudson Valley.
SS Max Burt0-for-4, RS, SB (7), K

RHP Zach Messinger: (W, 5-8) 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, HR
Messinger allowed a 3-run HR in the second inning but settled in nicely. He owns a 3.46 ERA (127.1 IP, 104 H, 66 R, 49 ER, 8 HR, 40 BB, 120 K). Watch him this offseason, as he is Rule 5 eligible. The Yankees are unlikely to leave him exposed and he might draw interest on the trade market. However, maybe they think he is a legitimate pitching option for some point in 2025.
RHP Cole Ayers1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
The Yankees had a choice of several relievers to promote. It does say something that Ayers was placed here. Like Messinger, he is Rule 5 eligible this winter.
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Since promotion: 3.29 ERA (13.2 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 21 K)
RHP Leonardo Pestana1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
At this level: 1.84 ERA (14.2 IP, 12 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 16 K)

Hudson Valley (57-52) (Tossed a 1-hitter against Hickory in a 2-0 victory)

2B Roc Riggio0-for-4, BB, 3 K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-5, RBI, K
Lombard Jr. needed a game like this to build confidence if nothing else.
CF Jace Avina0-for-5, 2 K
DH Omar Martinez0-for-1, RS, HBP, 3 BB, K
Martinez has a .376 OBP, which aligns with his .378 career mark (1,236 PA).
1B Josh Moylan1-for-4, 3 K
C Antonio Gomez1-for-3, RBI, CI, K
.231/.308/.423 in 119 PA. After the games of July 25th (not long ago), his triple slash was .143/.222/.286.
RF Garrett Martin1-for-4, 3 K
LF Anthony Hall1-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
3B Kiko Romero0-for-3, BB, 2 K

RHP Josh Grosz: (W, 2-1)  5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 3 K
Since his promotion: 11.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 7 BB, 4 K. It is an Interesting line, but at least he is putting zeroes on the board. He owned a 95/29 K/BB over 78.2 innings for Tampa, so the strikeout ability is there.
RHP Indigo Diaz1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since being placed here: 5.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. The 25-year-old was acquired along with Caleb Durbin for Lucas Luetge.
RHP Thomas Balboni Jr.: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (45-63) (Defeated Clearwater, 7-3)

CF Brendan Jones0-for-3, 2 RS, 2 SB (4), 2 BB, 2 K
Jones owns a 1.056 OPS in 26 PA (yes, a small sample) to begin his career. He is doing what you want the leadoff hitter to do: Take walks (8) and steal bases (4-for-4).
SS Roderick Arias2-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
.221/.322/.383 in 466 PA (16 doubles, 7 triples, 9 HR, 59 RBI, 62 R, 12.2% BB, 32.8% K). At the very least, he is getting a lot of reps in 2024.
RF Tyler Wilson: 3-for-5, RBI, RS, CS (1)
Back-to-back multi-hit efforts for the 22-year-old.
LF Marshall Toole: 3-for-3, 3 RBI, RS, 3 SB (6), 2 BB
Impressive night for Toole, who is 7-for-20 (2 doubles, 5 RBI, 7 BB, 5 K, 6-for-7 SB). He was the Yankees’ 15th-round pick out of Wofford.
2B Hans Montero0-for-5, 2 K

LHP Henry Lalane3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Lalane’s second Low-A start goes better than the first. I hope he can build from here. He is sitting comfortably in the 91-92 range and we haven’t seen the 97 he can dial it up to. Concerned? No. He has barely pitched this year.
RHP Kristofer Bow1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K

DSL Yankees (17-34) (Lost to DSL Rangers Red, 4-2)

3B Richard Matic1-for-3, BB, 2 K
C Luis Puello3-for-4, RS, K
.357/.439/.522 in 132 PA. Puello doesn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title. The DSL leader (Luis Pena (MIL) is hitting .393.
LF Gabriel Lara1-for-3, RS, SB (14), BB, K
RF Estivenzon Montero1-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 K

RHP Miguelangel Rodriguez2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

DSL Bombers (29-22) (Lost to DSL Mets Blue, 13-1. The season ends on August 20th, meaning they have only four more games. They are three games behind the Marlins (two in the loss column). Their chances at a wild card are non-existent, so they must win the division to go to the playoffs)

C Queni Pineda1-for-2, HR (4), RBI, RS, CS (3), BB
.256/.431/.421 in 160 PA with as many walks as strikeouts (37). I am not going to overrate 17-year-old players in the DSL, but the catching pipeline seems to be on solid ground.
