Yankees MILB 4/15: George Lombard Jr.: HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB

Notes:

C Alex Jackson and C/OF Cooper Hummel are on the Triple-A injured list. That explains why C Jesus Rodriguez was promoted to Scranton. Additionally, the Railriders activated catcher Edinson Duran. Duran (22) played in 24 games in Low-A Tampa last year, hitting .218/.307/.346 with four doubles and three triples. This won’t be his first taste of Scranton, as he went 0-for-2 in one game in 2023.

The Yankees’ active catching depth chart in Scranton consists of Rodriguez, Duran, and Ronaldo HernandezRodriguez is on the 40-man roster.

Antonio Gomez was moved up from Hudson Valley to replace Rodriguez in Somerset. 18-year-old Edison Vivas was moved from the FCL to Hudson Valley. Vivas played in two games for Hudson Valley in 2024, going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI.

Scranton (10-5) (Defeated Durham, 9-1, in a late-morning affair)

CF Ismael Munguia0-for-4, SAC
C Jesus Rodriguez2-for-5, RBI, 2 R
3-for-28 in seven games for Somerset; 3-for-7 in two games for Scranton. Baseball!
3B Jorbit Vivas3-for-5, 2B (4), R, SB (2)
Vivas has back-to-back 3-hit games and four 3-hit efforts in 15 games.  He is hitting .333/.424/.519 in 67 PA (4 doubles, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 9 BB, 4 K).
RF Everson Pereira1-for-5, HR (2), 4 RBI, R, 2 K
It wasn’t the biggest bomb in history (98.5 MPH/347 feet), but they all count the same on the scoreboard.
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-4, 2B (6), R
.315/.439/.593 in 66 PA (5 multi-hit efforts in 15 games)
   LF Duke Ellis0-for-1
DH Dominic Smith1-for-5, HR (1), RBI, R, K
Smith’s first HR as a member of the Yankees’ organization (I don’t count spring training!)
LF-1B Jose Rojas: 2-for-3, 2 2B (5), RBI, 2 R, BB, K
2B Andrew Velazquez2-for-3, RBI, R, BB
SS Braden Shewmake1-for-3, RBI, BB

RHP Erick Leal (W, 1-2): 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
The sinker-slider veteran reached 94.5 MPH with the sinker.
LHP Tyler Matzek0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
LHP Rob Zastryzny1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Reyzelman is heating up. He reached 97.5 MPH today (averaged 95.3).  It’s very hard to earn a slot in the Yankees’ bullpen, but I think there is a decent shot he makes his MLB debut this year.

Somerset (5-5) (Knocked off Altoona, 6-1)

3B Dylan Jasso: 2-for-5, 2B (1), HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 R, K
Jasso’s first Double-A homer is a lead-off blast.  After compiling zero extra-base hits in his first five games, he filled the doubles, triples, and home runs columns over his last two games.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-5, K
On the bright side, this improves his K%!
C Rafael Flores: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, K
.250/.357/.444 in 42 PA.
RF Garrett Martin1-for-3, 2B (1), HBP, BB
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-5, HR (1), RBI, R, 2 K
Hardman’s extra-base hit streak reaches four (3 doubles, 1 HR)
LF Cole Gabrielson: 1-for-4, BB, K
SS Jake Gatewood1-for-3, 2B (6), R, BB
Last three games: 6-for-10 (5 doubles, 1 triple)
DH Jared Wegner1-for-3, 2B (1), R, BB, 2 K
2B Max Burt0-for-3, R, HBP

RHP Brendan Beck: (W, 1-0)  6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Beck’s first career win was a long time coming. He faced 19 batters (one reached via error). A brilliant performance, following his strong performance in his first start. Overall: 10 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K. If Beck can stay healthy, he can help the big club quickly. That can manifest in a few ways: a starter for the Yankees or as a trade chip.
RHP Cole Percival1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Kelly Austin: (S, 2)  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. Austin has thrown well since being acquired from the Astros for Caleb Ferguson last year.

Hudson Valley (6-4) (Defeated Wilmington, 4-2)

DH Brendan Jones: 0-for-3, R, BB, K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-2, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, 2 SB (4), 2 BB
“Game power” is one of the tools he still needs to display. Once he does, he won’t just climb up prospect lists – he will surge up prospect lists. Yes, I am confident he will start flashing power.  He is hitting .333 with a .975 OPS (1 triple, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 9 R, 4-for-5 SB, 8 BB, 9 K)
CF Jackson Castillo0-for-2, 2 BB
Castillo has eight walks in 39 PA (20.5%).
LF Jace Avina1-for-4
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, 3 K
2B Jose Colmenares: 3-for-4, HR (2), RBI, R
Colmenares has 9 HR in 132 plate appearances over the last two seasons. One way to earn extra playing time is by hitting the snot out of the ball when you get opportunities.
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, K
1B Coby Morales2-for-4, 3B (2), K
RF Anthony Hall1-for-4, 2B (2), R, K

RHP Carlos Lagrange: (W, 1-1)  6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
Lagrange sets a new personal best for strikeouts in a game.  Like with Beck, this is his first career win (which makes sense, as it is his longest career outing and he reached five innings only one other time).
LHP Will Brian: (S, 1)  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
On a night of “firsts,” Brian earns his first career save. Season: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. That works.

Tampa (5-5) (Lost to St. Lucie, 17-6)

SS Roderick Arias0-for-3, R, BB
5-for-37 (.135; 2 doubles, 2 RBI, 4 R, 3-for-3 SB, 7 BB, 12 K). Rough start to his 2025 campaign.
DH Edgleen Perez0-for-4, R, K
CF Brian Sanchez1-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, 2 K
4 doubles, 2 triples in 9 games.
C Engelth Urena2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, R
Urena is taking his walks (9 in 41 PA; 21.95%). Perhaps the power is starting to show up (double, HR in his last three games).
3B Parks Harber1-for-3, R, BB
Harber has a 5-game hitting streak (6-for-17)
RF Tyler Wilson1-for-4, R, K
LF Dillon Lewis0-for-3, R, BB, K
2B Juan Matheus0-for-4, RBI
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, SF, RBI

RHP Andrew Landry: (L, 0-1)  1.1 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
Ouch. On the bright side, this will likely be Landry’s worst career performance.  Throw it away and move on.
RHP Cole Zaffiro3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Gus Hughes: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Alex Bustamante: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
RHP Duncan Pastore0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Pastore’s first career pitching appearance!
